ROLE SUMMARY:
SAR is looking for a qualified Chief Train Controller to be responsible for smooth safe and efficient train operations across SAR Network and engineering access, manage front line operational staff and assist train controllers in the discharge of their duties. In addition, manage operational incidents and be the focal point for all train running decisions and control center activities.
The Chief Train Controller is responsible for all aspects of train service delivery, incident management and industry information provision by leading and developing the Operations Control Center to provide an outstanding service to all railway industry customers and stakeholders.
An ideal candidate will have strong communication skills as this job requires to communicate within internal stakeholders i.e. Operations Control Center, Roling Stock Management, Infrastructure Maintenance, Mineral & Cargo and Passenger Operation, and Network Planning & Management.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of rules and associated instructions.
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of signalling control systems.
• Ensure that the safe operation of all lines on the SAR network is maintained.
• Ensure Safety procedures are maintained and understood.
• Ensure reactive activities to operational incidents are methodical and detailed, always ensuring the overall safety of the railway, staff and its customers are maintained.
• Expedite track access for essential engineering activities.

• Maintain written records and compile reports as directed.
• Ensures that SAR safety / operational regulations and requirements are met (compliance with provided Training).
• Performs a variety of duties for monitoring, analyzing, controlling the status and performance of main line rail operations.
• Coordinates activities with those of other operations and maintenance staff to minimize service interruptions; provides other departments and divisions with technical information relating to the train control operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
▪ Educated to degree level or matching experience.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
▪ 10 years.
COMPETENCIES:
• Multi Tasker.
• Proficiency in English Language.
• Ability to work under pressure.
• Knowledge of Passenger and Freight Operations organisational structure and route.
• Geographical knowledge of SAR railway infrastructure and familiarity with Train Service Recovery Plans.
• An excellent team worker who adepts at making objective decisions, even under pressure.
• Strong communication skills.
• Statistical, algebraic or geometric knowledge and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations.
• Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office, Internet applications, Analysis applications and Geographic information system (GIS).
• A Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Enthusiastic and pro-active.
• Ability to work independently or in a team environment as needed.
• Ability to engage with customers, and build collaborative relationships with stakeholders.
