In accordance with policies and standards established by the University of Calgary, Student Counsellor performs a variety of tasks related to the Student Services responsibilities at the University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ).
The nature of the work is driven by deadlines, interruptions and shifting priorities; it is imperative that the Student Counsellor can work well in a team-based environment and with minimal direct supervision. S/he must stay current and up-to-date with regulations of the University of Calgary related to the academic requirements and regulations for the U of C nursing programs.
Primary Purpose of the Position: (Key purpose, functions, roles):
The primary focus of this position will be to provide personal, academic and career counseling to individual students or groups of students and to develop & deliver student wellness, leadership & student success programs.
Qualifications/Expertise Required:
Graduation from a recognized university with a Master’s degree in Psychology
Education with focus on counseling, Social Work or a related degree with minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in university or corporate environment.
Previous experience in a post-secondary student counseling role is strongly recommended
Cultural sensitivity and awareness of the needs of diverse (cultural, ethnic and age) population in the transnational post-secondary setting
A student-centered approach, a strong degree of compassion and empathy
Well-developed presentation skills
Exemplary communication skills
Excellent interpersonal/ intrapersonal skills
A demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships in a team environment
A strong commitment to promoting student success
Previous work experience in a multicultural environment would be an asset
Ability to work productively in a framework of operations that fully respects the laws, culture and religion of Qatar
Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-based environment
Ability to work in a confidential setting and demonstrate good judgment in dealing with culturally sensitive situations
Flexibility, adaptability and the maturity to work in an ever changing environment
A high degree of professionalism
Ability to speak Arabic would be an asset

Accountabilities/Tasks and Duties:
Provides professional and appropriate personal and academic counseling to students
Fosters cooperative and trusting relationships with students, faculty and staff to help develop a student centered, caring environment
Makes referrals to other UCQ offices as appropriate
Stays current with developments related to student wellness, campus life and student counseling
Provide counseling services for individual students, groups and in the classroom
Function as independent, responsible professional in accordance with professional codes of ethics and the traditional duties and responsibilities of scholars, consulting and collaborating with academic and administrative leaders
Demonstrate range, depth, and flexibility in responding professionally to student needs for preventative, developmental or academic counseling in order to facilitate the students taking full advantage of educational and other opportunities presented by the university. Issues might include educational, vocational, personal, interpersonal and social concerns. Services may be direct, involving immediate contact with the student , or indirect, involving consultation with third parties.
Provide and support psychological testing as appropriate to the clients concern, for example in career counseling
Provide information to students and faculty and staff to facilitate the appropriate use of on-campus and off-campus resources e.g. Quite Zone
Respond to mental health emergencies and other crises, as appropriate and upon request
Demonstrate specialized expertise in particular areas of counseling
Act as a consultant to:
administrators and faculty members in their dealings with students and with respect to policy issues which affect students
parents of students with respect to issues involving student functioning
public and private agencies which bear some responsibility for students
Show diplomacy and good judgment in interpreting various aspects of university policy and procedures to clients, members of the campus community and the general public
Respond, when possible, to requests by members of the campus community for participation in specialized educational activities (e.g., workshops, seminars)
Facilitate the provision of in-service and other training programs for faculty members, student advisors, and others with respect to matters affecting student welfare e.g. NSSQ Committee, Lactation Lounge
Engage in self-evaluation of effectiveness in counseling/teaching and take necessary measures to enhance his/her skills, in consultation with colleagues and clients, as appropriate.
Occupational Health & Safety
Understands and complies with the requirements of the University’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy
Has knowledge of and understands the expectations of the University’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) and applicable
Faculty/Departmental/Unit specific health and safety policies and procedures
Ensures that all work conducted is in accordance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code and other health and safety legislation as applicable
