Job Summary
The Laboratory Transcriptionist is a medical language specialist who transcribes dictation by the pathologists in order to document laboratory reports and findings. The Medical Transcriptionist may need assistance to interpret dictation that is unclear or inconsistent, or make use of professional reference materials.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
• Accurately transcribes the required patient identifiers such as the complete name and the medical record number.
• Transcribes dictations accurately, utilizing correct punctuation, grammar and spelling, and edits for inconsistencies.
• Maintains/consults references for medical procedures and terminology.
• Keeps a transcription log.
• Distributes transcribed reports and collects dictation tapes.
• Follows up on a pathologists’ modified, missing or incomplete dictation, returns printed or electronic report in a timely fashion.
• Answer and screen phone calls to determine nature of request or problem; refer the request or problem to appropriate staff member
• To perform various data entry and information retrieval tasks using computerized patient records system.
• Type/word process and proof read clinical notes, correspondence, reports, forms, manuals, records, and other materials from taped, handwritten or typed copies.
• Assist in related record keeping, bookkeeping and administrative tasks as necessary.
• Participate in committees and other tasks as and when assigned.
