The role of the consultant in the department of neurology is heavily weighted on interactions with many departments (such as the radiology department). They must have excellent communication skills and take active administrative and teaching roles. Consultants may admit, diagnose, evaluate and treat patients. They may scrutinize, analyze and investigate patients using neurophysiological techniques, radiological studies and physical examinations. They are responsible for attending several forms of rounds and preparing lectures. They are in charge of supporting and guiding junior staff.
Admits, treats, evaluates and diagnosis neurology patients
- Must be able to read, interpret and scrutinize neuro-imaging and radiological findings including the interpretation of CT scans and MRIs
- Must attend Neuro-radiology meetings which are held weekly to discuss findings
- Must attend daily morning meetings where newly admitted cases are discussed in the presence of specialists and residents
- Out-patient duty in the clinic is compulsory twice per week irrespective of the volume of patients
- Should be able to report neurophysiological findings such as nerve conduction studies etc.
- Must perform daily ‘neurology-related’ rounds where each consultant is obliged to see the patients that they have admitted under their name
- Must dedicated to the six days per month performing ‘weekend rounds’ where the consultant is obliged to visit patients in neurology regardless of whether it is their patient or not.
- Must attend ‘grand rounds’ which involves all members of the department of neurology as per departmental policy.
