The role
Health and Safety Assistant
To assist the site QHSE officer with the monitoring of site activities and ensure that workers comply with Macro policies, site rules and government safety regulations. To assist with the development of policies and procedures, carry out safety inspections, carry out regular tool box talks, report on and investigate accidents and incidents, conduct safety training to ensure compliance where possible with the occupational health and safety administration (OHSAS).
Your responsibilities will include:
Assisting in ensuring implementation of Macro’s health, safety, environmental and quality management processes on site.
Assisting in ensuring that all managers and staff are aware of their individual and collective health, safety, environmental and quality responsibilities.
Assisting in ensuring that the site policies, processes and procedures are subject to regular auditing, monitoring and review to verify compliance and effectiveness.
Familiarization with the site plant and conditions and any risks associated with these.
Daily monitoring of the site to identify any unsafe conditions and behaviors.
Providing assistance and support to the team regarding the identification of all risks in and around the site (including the delivery of facilities management services, subcontractor activities, and fit out activities).
Assisting in ensuring that documented safe systems of work are developed, implemented and maintained for all activities undertaken across the business.
Ensuring that the inspection of any workplace area is conducted before the commencement of works and after the completion of works.
Taking necessary action for any safety violations or property damage.
Assisting in ensuring that adequate fire management and fire or emergency evacuation procedures and arrangements are in place at the site.
Assisting in ensuring that appropriate first aid facilities are available on site and that they are being used correctly.
Assisting in the development, implementation, monitoring and review of health, safety and environmental plans, quality plans and associated objectives and targets.
Assisting with the reporting (to the other site team members) on all health, safety, environmental and quality aspects and issues affecting the site’s operations and work activities.
Assisting in the review of internal compliance in accordance with the provisions of the company’s internal audit procedure and relevant international standards (OHSAS 18001; ISO 9001 and ISO 14001).
Assisting the Macro site team with active monitoring of service providers’ activities to ensure consistency of service delivery in accordance with approved safe systems of work, risk assessments, method statements and standard operating procedures and permit to work conditions.
Recording all reported accidents, incidents and dangerous occurrences including those of the service providers or subcontractors and site contractors and assist the Macro team in the reporting of these requirements.
Carrying out investigation for all reported accidents, incidents and dangerous occurrences and actively participate in such investigations as required, making recommendations for corrective or preventive action to avoid future recurrences.
Reporting to the technical coordinator on necessary remedial actions or enhanced risk controls required following audits, inspections and accident investigations and ensure that all relevant actions are correctly implemented in timely manner.
The requirements
Your experience, knowledge and skills need to include:
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role.
Knowledge and experience of HSE and quality management principles, practices and risk control techniques.
Knowledge, experience and training in fire risk assessment.
Ability to develop and implement HSE action plans.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Persuasive with ability to positively influence others at management and staff levels.
Ability to be assertive with site contractors and technicians.
Knowledge and experience of accident and incident investigation and cause analysis and be able to assist with an investigation.
Ability to deliver toolbox talks to technicians and contractor.
Experienced IT skills including use of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel etc.).
Flexible and adaptable with a “can do” attitude.
Ability to work under pressure to meet objectives and deadlines.
Willingness to take or share responsibility or ownership of tasks and issues not strictly within normal job scope or field of work.
Willingness to share knowledge.
Ability to interface with customers or clients if required.
Team player but with ability to work on own initiative.
Experience of management systems - OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 standards.
Experience within the gulf region.
Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment.
People management skills.
Ability to manage a diverse and fluctuating workload.
Qualifications
A qualification in ‘General Safety Certificate’ or equivalent level.
