The Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation is a non-profit academic organisation that was founded to support and advance the protection, preservation and study of Islamic intellectual and artistic heritage. It specialises in scholarly publishing, fine book design, and the care and management of manuscript collections. The Foundation has offices in Cairo, Egypt; the University of Cambridge, England; and Stuttgart, Germany.
Position Summary
The TIF-DAK Manuscript Project is seeking to fill a full-time The Arabic editor- Translator (English -Arabic) at the Project’s office in Cairo, Egypt. The Arabic editor- Translator will be expected to translate scientific books on library and museum environment, Islamic codicology and disciplines related to the care and management of manuscript collection. The contract is for one year.
Salary and benefits
Salary: 6300 le
Probation: 3 months
Working hours: Sunday-Thursday, 40 hours/week
Annual leave: 30 days plus Egyptian public holidays
Basic Qualifications
• BA or higher degree in Arabic Language and Literature, Translation Studies or other relevant degree
• Professional experience translating from English to Arabic
• Professional experience in Arabic editing (preferably with high esteemed academics and institutes in Egypt e.g. Academy of the Arabic Language in Cairo, al-Azhar al-sharif or any of its subsidiary bodies)
• Demonstrated good ability to translate from Arabic to English
Language Skills
• Native Arabic proficiency with an excellent command of written and spoken MSA (Fusha)
• Advanced written and spoken English
Desirable Qualifications
Knowledge of museology, a discipline relating to the care and management of manuscript collections (e.g. cataloguing, conservation or digitization), and/or codicology an advantage. Familiarity with Arabic manuscript collections terminology and history of the Book tradition in the Islamic Civilization.
